This is a breakdown of how the insurance plan works for undergraduate students, graduate students and staff.
Undergraduates:
- Undergraduate insurance is billed under the insurance company, Telus Health Assure. Your student number is used as your client identification.
- Must be a full-time student (from fall semester with 4 courses) – if you are taking less than 4 courses, you will not be opted into the drug and dental insurance plan and will need to manually opt-in to the plan. Please contact CUSA (Carleton Undergraduate Student Association) for questions and concerns (613) 520-6688
- International students: you are not automatically included in the medication insurance even though you are a full time student. You must speak with CUSA to have the extra fee charged on your tuition for medication coverage.
- Part time students can opt-into the medication coverage but there is a fee.
- There is a limit to how much you can charge on your insurance during the year. (Usually around $2000)
- The insurance covers up to 80% of the medication cost, depending on the cost of the medication itself.
Example: the Gardasil vaccine cost around $220.00, if using your undergraduate insurance, you pay around $50.
Graduate students:
- Graduate insurance is billed under the insurance company, Green Shield Canada. Your student number is used as your client identification.
- Being graduate students differ in how much time they spend in a class, some insurance plans may not work automatically. The pharmacy is able to try to see if your plan is working but in the case it is not, please contact the Graduate Student Association (613) 520-6616
- There is a limit to how much you can charge on your insurance during the year. (Usually around $2000).
- The insurance covers up to 80% of the medication cost, depending on the cost of the medication itself.
Full-Time Employees:
- Employee insurance is billed under the insurance company, Telus Health Assure. Your employee number is used as your client identification.
- There is a yearly $25 deductible to pay when you first fill a prescription. (This deductible comes into play at the beginning of the year but doesn’t activate until you fill your first prescription of the year, whenever that may be).
- The insurance covers up to 80% of the medication cost, depending on the cost of the medication itself.
- Please note: vaccines are not covered on this insurance plan. That includes vaccines for travel, HPV, shingles, etc.
Notes: these insurances cover a large amount of medications but there will be times where something is not covered. Any over-the-counter medications (medications that do not require a prescription) will most likely not be covered. The pharmacy staff will inform you when your insurance plan does not cover a medication.
TA Insurance: medications are not covered through your CTA identification.
We can also combine insurance plans, so if you were to have a student plan and a plan under your parents, both can be used at once.
